SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide) is a tetrapeptide that selectively targets the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is among the most studied mitochondria-targeting peptides in contemporary research and has been the subject of multiple clinical-stage investigations.

Mechanisms of Action

SS-31 binds selectively to cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Research has focused on its role in stabilizing mitochondrial cristae structure, improving electron transport chain efficiency, and reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Preclinical models have examined SS-31 in ischemia-reperfusion injury, heart failure, and age-related mitochondrial dysfunction.
